President's PEN:

Our Association is pleased to continue strong friendships with our international sister cities as well as the Volusia community and universities that share our mission for global outreach and exchange.  We welcome members and friends to join us in future activities and events.

Congratulations to graduating seniors Venecia Ambriz, Jocelyn Santiago Mendoza and Alexa Martinez for receiving the Sister Cities Betty Nelson Scholarship.  The Awards Program was held at Taylor High School in May.  Our Association is pleased to assist students each year and recognize their achievements.  The annual Volusia County World Language Festival is also sponsored by our Association to promote and encourage cultural awareness.

Terrific T-shirts have been designed this year through the combined efforts of teachers Chris Gellerman, NSBH, Nadia Acosta, Escuela Preparatoria Campeche, and their students.  If you have not purchased one yet, contact us!  The funds are added to our Scholarship account.

Board member Joe Cavanaugh has written and presented his play, “Keepers of the Dream” to our community with rave reviews!  His poetry also continues to be enjoyed at many venues.

Celebrating 25 years as sister cities with Bayonne, France, and 28 years with Campeche, Mexico, inspired visits to both international sister cities.  Special thanks to our friends in both cities as we enjoyed their hospitality and participated in the annual event of each country.  We look forward to hosting citizens from Bayonne and Campeche in Volusia County and future visits to both cities.  Dr. Mary Risner, UF, continues the annual summer Campeche Global Teacher Leader Institute.

An evaluation of the Sister Cities Association of Volusia County was provided by Sherry Gaynor.  A summary is included in our Newsletter.  Thanks to Sherry for the positive findings and recommendations she shared.

Save the date, November 8, for our annual Scholarship fundraiser and dinner at the Palmetto Club in Daytona Beach.  We hope to schedule Voces Hispanas again in the fall in collaboration with Stetson University.  Be sure to visit the murals at One Daytona, painted by Erwin Dazelle, Bayonne artist.  And visit our Facebook Page and web site for news of current and future events.  Special thanks to Board members and friends who continue to support our mission within our community and abroad.
