Welcome to a review of our Association’s most recent activities and events, and to a look ahead to future Save the Date endeavors. We are enjoying wearing our Sister Cities T-shirts to our events and encourage friends and members to purchase a T-shirt which supports our scholarship fund.
Congratulations to Yazury Cortez and Isaac Garcia, recipients of the Sister Cities Betty Nelson Scholarship, graduating seniors of Taylor Middle High School. Also, Thomas El Khoury, senior at Spruce Creek High School, received an award from Sister Cities at the Volusia County Schools World Language Festival. We are very pleased to continue acknowledging students in the Volusia County School System and encouraging their future educational pursuits.
Strong connections continue with our sister cities in Bayonne, France and Campeche, Mexico. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University students experienced a warm reception in a new culture during their spring break in Bayonne. Special thanks to our friends in Bayonne who enhanced their visit. Campeche is welcoming Dr. Mary Risner, UF, as she visits in May to continue arranging educational opportunities for Sister Cities and Campeche. We also appreciate our connection with Dr. Melanie Smith, Stetson University International Learning Programs, as we plan our annual Hispanic poetry evening held at Stetson in the fall.
Our Association appreciates the continued support of friends and members who join us on our mission to promote international friendship, understanding and cooperation between the citizens of Volusia County and our sister cities. My thanks to our Board for the dedication and involvement in the Sister Cities Association of Volusia County as well as their involvement and planning in local community events.
Board members are active in our community in poetry and historical documentaries. Watch for more information from Joe Cavanaugh on “Poets for Peace” and the completion of the documentary on Mary McLeod Bethune by Len Lempel. The generosity of our Board members has also provided funds for the benefit of children in the Albergue Infantil, a children’s home in Campeche.
